China Tour - 2010

If music is an international language, then the musicians of Grand Symphonic Winds will do well communicating with others during their visit to China this spring. GSW has been invited to attend the 2010 World EXPO Shanghai International Band Festival, which takes place April 25-May 4. Under the direction of Dr. Matthew George, the 55-member civic wind ensemble will perform works in a variety of venues in Shanghai and Beijing.

The opportunity arose when George, who is also Director of Bands and Chair of the Department of Music at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, received an invitation from the Chinese Association of Symphonic Band Ensembles, host of the international event that involves bands and wind ensembles from around the world. George regards the trip as an important opportunity for performers to share culturally and musically.

Downtown ShanghaiThe Shanghai International Band Festival is a large-scale event aimed at promoting the international exchange of wind music, showing the level of wind arts in various countries and regions and enhancing the development of wind music greatly. The festival will be held one week before opening day of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

"Traveling to Shanghai is a wonderful opportunity to experience the Chinese culture," said trumpet player, Margie Debelek. "At the Expo, we'll also see the best cultural and innovative exhibits of countries around the world." The 2010 World Expo, which will be open through October 2010, is an international showcase of culture and technology. 200 countries and 50 international organizations are expected to participate in the Expo.
